The year has gone by at breakneck speed and we are looking forward to a short break over the festive season. We closed on Monday 22 December and I am now able to write and recap some of the highlights of 2014. The practice will reopen on Wednesday 7 January 2015.
We feel blessed to have welcomed many new patients to our practice this year and we always look forward to welcoming our existing patients when they pay us a return visit!
The year started on a good note when we got the exciting news that Sandy had been selected to attend a two day course at the Neostrata Physician’s Academy in Princeton, USA in July 2014. Ian was invited to accompany her and what an incredible experience it was to be in the esteemed company of the founders of Neostrata, Dr Eugene van Scott and Dr Ruey Yu during the training sessions.
A highlight was the visit to the Neostrata headquarters and laboratories in Princeton. where so much was learnt about this advanced, evidence-based, innovative range of products. We were able to see for ourselves the research, development and science that lies behind the Neostrata brand.
Princeton is one of the most beautiful ivy league university towns in America and it certainly was a worthwhile trip in terms of not only what we learnt but who we met – the founders of Neostrata, the staff who run this dynamic company, other doctors from around the world and also people who have worked with the Neostrata products for many years.
From Princeton we made our way to Boston, to visit a longstanding friend and a colleague of Ian, Dr Jeffrey Dover. He is part of a large clinic in Boston called Skin Physicians and it was very interesting to see the number of staff, lasers and the variety of treatments offered at the clinic – sixteen Skin Physicians (Dermatologists) work at the clinic! Dr Dover was Ian’s mentor and the professor from Harvard University, who trained him to use lasers when he was specializing in Dermatology at Groote Schuur Hospital.
What a wonderful reunion it was to see Jeff and his Dermatologist wife, Tania and to catch up with them at both their beautiful home in Boston and their holiday house at near Cape Cod. It is always interesting to see how other practices operate and we felt proud to see that the quality of care and treatment we provide is very much of a similar standard even though we are much smaller.
From Boston we made our way to New York where we spent five days visiting various specialist skincare shops and clinics selling skincare products. We spent a great deal of time looking at new trends and anti-ageing/skin wellness products. We were amazed to see the choices and at times it was quite overwhelming! We arrived back in Cape Town filled with wonderful memories, armed with new ideas and filled with energy to tackle the second half of 2014.
Ian attended the annual Dermatology Congress at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg in August and I accompanied him so that I could see what new products were being showcased at the congress.
Throughout 2014 we have been working on a new and exciting project at Dr Ian Webster which we will be sharing this with you in January 2015. It has taken a lot of time, research, development and much hard work to bring it to fruition but we think it is something most of our patients will benefit from in one way or another!
The laser clinic Ian purchased last year together with two other Dermatologists has seen a steady growth this year and we have some exciting plans for it in 2015! We have a small but dedicated team who are professional and enthusiastic and we thank them for their input during the past year.
We have continued to help editors during 2014 with media articles and specialist dermatology information when it has been requested. This is a part of the practice we really enjoy – adding educational value to what we do through blogs, articles etc.
Ian was every excited to introduce Dermapen, a new advanced needling treatment into the practice during 2014. He hasn’t been disappointed with the results judging by the feedback from our patients who are very happy with their results! Sarah Stringer our skin therapist has become something of an expert with this treatment and we see ourselves as a centre of Dermapen excellence!
Dermapen helps to treat fine lines and wrinkles, smoker’s lines around the lips, acne scars and it helps to tighten and rejuvenate the skin using a similar type of technology to fractional laser but just not as costly.
We introduced the Skin Medica range into the practice this year with their growth factor products which are quite simply fabulous! We continue to see strong growth in the sales of Neostrata and Skinceuticals – we feel very proud that all three of these top ranges we stock were founded by Dermatologists and all three come with evidence-based pedigrees!
Our loyal and motivated staff members at the practice are of great value to us and we continue to get compliments from our patients about how they are prepared to go the extra mile – each member of our team is special: Gail and Renzana on reception and administration, Sarah our skin therapist and Kim our nursing sister.
All that is left is for us to say thank you – we never take anything for granted in our practice especially our patient care – we feel privileged to have you as patients and clients and we value your loyalty, support and friendship greatly.
We wish you a Peaceful and Happy Christmas with your loved ones and may 2015 be a year of blessings for you.
